How to Prepare for a Sleep Study

Whether you're having an inpatient sleep study or home sleep study, there are some things you must do on the day of the sleep study to prepare:

  • Avoid napping
  • Avoid caffeine after noon
  • Take all medications as usual
  • Behave normally

Preparing for a Home Sleep Study

For a home sleep study, you have 2 options:

  1. Visit the sleep center before the date of the study to pick up the monitoring equipment. A technician will show you how to use it properly so that you know what to do when you do the sleep study.
  2. Have your equipment mailed directly to your home. The package includes a small disposable device, along with a link to a tutorial video that will guide you through the testing process.

Preparing for an Inpatient Sleep Study

If you're having an inpatient sleep study, you may be asked to bring sleep notes or your sleep diary, as well as pajamas and a toothbrush.
