What to Expect with Augmentation Therapy

Augmentation therapy is usually administered in a clinic, hospital or outpatient infusion center. However, some patients administer the infusions at home themselves after receiving instruction and approval from their doctor.

Augmentation therapy is given weekly, and you will continue to receive weekly therapy for the duration of your life. Learn more about how to prepare.

Common Side Effects

Augmentation therapy can have side effects. The most common side effects of augmentation therapy are:

  • Fatigue: fatigue means feeling tired for long periods of time. Fatigue, or feeling drained, is a common side effect of augmentation therapy.
  • Flu-like symptoms: these include feeling tired or feverish, chills, nausea, body ache and loss of appetite. These symptoms can often be eliminated or improved by infusing the medication at a slower rate.
  • Mild allergic reaction: some patients experience a mild reaction to augmentation therapy, including hives, itchiness, tightness in the chest and wheezing. These symptoms can often be managed by taking an antihistamine prior to receiving augmentation therapy.
