Antibiotics are drugs that are used to fight infections caused by bacteria. Antibiotics work by killing bacteria in the body and stopping them from reproducing. Antibiotics are a very effective type of medicine and can save lives when they are used properly. There are many different types of antibiotics that are designed to fight different kinds of bacteria.

For patients with lung conditions, antibiotics can be used to treat infections such as pneumonia and chronic bronchitis.

Antibiotics cannot treat infections that are caused by viruses. It is important to know that taking antibiotics to try and treat a viral infection can actually be harmful. This is because each time you take antibiotics, bacteria that are present in the body can change and become resistant to the antibiotic, which means the antibiotic could be ineffective against the new, changed bacteria.

It is important to follow directions carefully when you take antibiotics and to finish all of the medicine prescribed to you. If you do not finish your medicine, some of the bacteria causing the infection could survive, and you could be re-infected.
