What Are Symptoms of Tracheobronchomalacia?

Patients with tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) have different symptoms depending on their age, the cause of their weak windpipe, and the severity of their condition.

But some people with tracheobronchomalacia may not have signs or symptoms at first. The condition usually becomes worse over time. Most people will develop symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Sputum retention — being unable to clear mucus from the respiratory tract
  • Wheezing when breathing out
  • High-pitched sound when breathing in
  • Frequent upper respiratory infections, especially in children
