Treatments & Procedures

Because pulmonary hypertension has such a wide range of causes and related conditions, patients with PH should be seen at a center that specializes in the disease. The Pulmonary Hypertension program at Temple works to provide a wide range of treatments, from medicines to advanced surgical procedures. Physicians in the Pulmonary Hypertension program also have extensive experience administering specialized treatments for PH, such as prescribing pulmonary vasodilator medications which can be highly effective, but can be difficult for general practitioners to manage.

Pulmonary hypertension is a complex disease, but new therapies are becoming available by way of clinical studies and ongoing research. Temple’s Pulmonary Hypertension program is actively involved in research investigating and evaluating new drugs and other treatments for PH.

Thanks to the experience of Temple’s pulmonary hypertension specialists, most pulmonary hypertension can be well managed with medication. However, physicians in the pulmonary hypertension program also work closely with Temple’s lung transplantation program and thoracic surgery program to provide surgical treatments for more advanced pulmonary hypertension, including lung transplant, and pulmonary thromboendarterectromy.

In addition, patients in the pulmonary hypertension program may be referred to Temple’s sleep disorders program for treatment of sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, helping them to sleep and breathe better.

Within the Temple Lung Center, the pulmonary hypertension program offers full-service treatment of all types of PH. Physicians, nurses, and other health care providers work together and collaborate with specialists in related fields to provide comprehensive, aggressive treatment for PH.

Though treatment of pulmonary hypertension has significantly improved, there is no cure for PH at this point in time. However, with aggressive treatment managed by highly experienced physicians, the outcomes and quality of life of PH patients can be dramatically improved. Fortunately, treatments for pulmonary hypertension are constantly improving, which means that more effective treatment options are becoming available for patients. At Temple Lung Center, PH patients benefit both from experienced, specialized physicians as well as a robust clinical trials program. We aim to use these resources to provide the most positive outcomes possible for each patient.
