COPD Treatments & Services

The Temple Lung Center offers the latest technologies and medications for treating COPD. Because COPD encompasses several different disorders, treatment will differ depending on the particular type of COPD a patient has, as well as how advanced the disease is. Many patients with early stage COPD find their disease can be well managed with anti-inflammatory medications and bronchodilators. Patients with more advanced COPD may require surgery to remove damaged portions of the lungs (lung volume reduction surgery), or to replace the lungs altogether (lung transplantation). Most patients at Temple’s COPD Program also receive help managing their symptoms and treatment, as well as education about their disease in the form of pulmonary rehabilitation.

COPD patients at Temple may receive one or more of the following treatments:

  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Beta blockers
  • Biologic therapies
  • Bronchodilators (inhaled medications)
  • Bronchoscopic procedures
  • Lung or heart-lung transplantation
  • Lung volume reduction surgery
  • Bullectomy
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Smoking cessation
