Michael's Story

Lung Transplant

Michael’s Story – Temple Health

Struggling for Every Breath

Michael’s daughter, Sara remembers him spending hours teaching her to boogie board at the Jersey Shore. He loved the beach, the ocean, just being there with his family, but a serious lung disease made it increasingly difficult for him to breathe.  Michael first got sick when Sara was five and by the time she was in 8th grade, his health was declining rapidly. He needed oxygen to breathe. He had to stop working. Even simple activities had become impossible.

“I definitely worried about losing him,” says Sara. “I wanted to do something to help him because he was always there to help me. I was afraid he wouldn’t be there to see me graduate from high school.”

Michael was suffering from a condition called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis which gradually destroys the lung’s ability to contract and expand. His local pulmonologists in Bethlehem said there was nothing more they could do for him. They referred him to the Temple Lung Center.

More Time to Make Memories

The Temple Lung Center doctors had so much experience dealing with conditions like dad’s, and people who need lung transplants. From the moment we got there, we had hope. They really respected us, and they never gave up on dad.”

Temple has given me the last 14 years and enabled me to enjoy life, do all the things that other people my age are able to do."

Michael

Michael was a high risk patient but the Temple Lung Center performed a successful transplant that saved his life.

That was almost 14 years ago. Since then, Michael has seen Sara graduate from high school, and college, and to walk her down the aisle at the same beach where he taught her to boogie board all those years ago.

“It was the most wonderful feeling to have my dad at my wedding. We knew we wanted to get married on Long Beach Island because it was such a special place to us for my whole life. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house.”

The Temple Lung Center has helped thousands of people live longer and have a better quality of life.
